Inauguration Kandt-House Museum

The “Kandt-House-Museum” finally opened its doors. As the former home of the first German “Resident” in Rwanda during colonial times this museum gives in particular an insight in the traditions and life in Rwanda at the turn of the 20th century. The colonial epoch and its influence on Rwanda and its people is explained in a modern style museum with photos from the era long forgotten in archives in Germany.

The museum has been made possible by a close cooperation of the Institute of National Museums of Rwanda together with the German Embassy and the Office of Coordination of Partnership of Rhineland-Palatinate / Rwanda. Richard Kandt, a German explorer and medical doctor, founder of the city of Kigali and first representative of the colonial power as their “Resident” was born on 17 December 1867.
